Grenzebach contributes to award-winning intralogistics at Porsche in Leipzig

In February of 2020, Porsche‘s production plant in Leipzig was awarded the Logistics Award by the German Association of the Automotive Industry. A Grenzebach Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) solution for Automated Goods Transport is part of the award-winning logistics concept. In the complex sequential production for the Macan and Panamera models, 30 Grenzebach L1200S AGVs reliably supply seats and back seats in the final assembly stage.

The project

Our customer:

Porsche Leipzig GmbH is a 100% subsidiary of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG. The Panamera and Macan vehicle types are manufactured at the Leipzig site.

The challenge for the customer:

Porsche wanted a solution for the efficient and flexible transportation of seats and rear benches at their plant in Leipzig. The production of the Macan and Panamera models requires customized production, where the right parts need to be delivered to the right place at the right time. Before automation, this transportation was done manually with tugger trains, which was less flexible and efficient.

The solution:

Grenzebach provided an L1200S automated guided vehicle (AGV) system. This system automatically transports seats and rear benches from the receiving area to the production line. The Grenzebach AGVs provide the benefits of high availability and just-in-sequence delivery of vehicle components. The individual transport of parts allows for flexible adjustment and prioritization of transport orders. The Grenzebach Fleet Manager optimizes the allocation of trips and makes efficient use of the vehicle's battery charge. Safety mechanisms creates the safe parallel use of driverless transport systems and manual handling equipment. Thanks to this comprehensive solution, Porsche has been able to significantly increase the efficiency and flexibility of its production processes, for which it received the Logistics Award of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) in February 2020.

“The complexity of the task was to provide the right seats and rear benches at the right place on the production line at the right time to meet the individual requirements of vehicle production. Thanks to the Grenzebach solution, which enables precise positioning and flexible adjustment, Porsche was able to significantly increase the efficiency and flexibility of its production processes.”
