HAMLAR/ Germany. The United Nations, acting on the initiative of the International Commission on Glass (ICG), the Community of Glass Associations (CGA) and ICOM-Glass, declared 2022 the 'International Year of Glass' (IYOG), thus honoring the scientific, economic and cultural importance of the transparent material. Different associations and companies from Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein formed a committee to coordinate the regional activities revolving around the festival year. As a technology innovator in the field of industrial glass production, Grenzebach contributes to IYOG activities in cooperation with the VDMA Forum Glastechnik.
Fascination glass
Glass has influenced the world in an infinite number of ways – from architectural glass to automotive glass to solar glass. This unique material consists of just four ingredients: Sand, lime, dolomite, and soda. As early as 3,500 years before Christ, people in Egypt were fascinated by glass and made use of its enormous potential, starting its victory march.
“In 1959, Sir Alastair Pilkington pioneered the float glass process, clearing the way for industrial flat glass production – another milestone in the history of glass. We share his dedication and excitement for the transparent material and are consequently developing the glass production technology with our innovative strength and thirst for knowledge. That’s why we are pleased to be part of the International Year of Glass.”
Under the IYOG umbrella, the Germany-Austria-Liechtenstein committee strives to bring people together centered around the topic of glass and to provide information about glass in all its diversity.
